notes:
The legendary existences of great inner lakes in the interior of South America was believed for several centuries. The present-day Pantanal, the world's largest wetlands, was thought to be either Eupana Lacus or Lake Xarayes [Xareyes, Xaraes]. Nuñes Cabeza de Vaca, founder of the city of Asunción heard of Lake Xarayes from a native American tribe of the same name. Parime or Manoa was thought to be where the fabulous El Dorado was located.
