notes:
|
The major temple at Mexico City, called Tenochtitlan by Aztecs (also called Temistitan by Europeans in the sixteenth century), was surmounted by two sanctuaries--the one on the left dedicated to Tlaloc (the god of rain), the one on the right to Huitzilopochtli (the god of the sun and war). The wood blocks used to create this edition of Ramusio's Navigationi et viaggi were destroyed in a fire in 1557. Later editions used illustrations which seem similar but were made from new wood blocks.
