Narrative description: 
Bartlett's description of the site in his Personal Narrative dates the drawing as late June of 1852 when the Boundary Commission was surveying upstream along the Gila River as part of its return trip from San Diego to El Paso. Related drawing JRB093 forms the basis of this watercolor and of the woodcut that appears on p. 205 of volume 2 of the Personal Narrative, although in the woodcut several tents and people on a river terrace have been added, as well as a long train of wagons, horse, and mules crossing the channel of the Gila.
