Title:
Junction of the Colorado & Gila Rivers
Place:
Former junction of the Gila and Colorado rivers, at the base of a hill that was later occupied by the Arizona Territorial Prison in Yuma, Arizona
Date:
June 16, 1852
Image technique:
watercolor on coarse-textured paper
Image dimensions:
13.9 x 9.7 inches
Narrative description:
View of the junction of two rivers with figures in foreground. Includes ocotillo in flower and cacti. This watercolor is similar to JRB066 which is a pencil sketch by Pratt. Pratt made numerous sketches of the Fort Yuma area the previous January. The ocotillo would not have been in flower in June when Bartlett painted this watercolor, so the inclusion of the flowering plant is mysterious.
