Engraved map, hand colored
Geographical description: 
Map of Hispaniola with the French part, or Saint Domingue, present-day Haiti, in light pink and the Spanish part, or present-day Santo Domingo, hand-colored in dark pink. Map also includes portions of the islands of Cuba, Jamaica, Puerto Rico and all of the islands of the Turks and Caicos and portions of the Bahamas. Bar scales given in lieux marine and lieux communes, however approximate scale determined from degrees of latitude. Includes text and inset map at upper left hand corner with title: "Plan de la ville espagnole de S. Domingue et d'une partie de ses environs donné par le S. B*** le XX may M DCCXVII". The inset map of Santo Domingo measures 16 x 12 cm, the barscale is given in toises (scale is approximately 1:2,250), and has an lettered key of important places. "Suivant l'observation du R.P. Feuillée le fort de S. Louis est a 75 D 35 M de longitude occid. du meridien de Paris qui reviennent au 304 D 25 M de celui de l'Isle de Fer" printed in small text at lower left hand bottom of map. Relief shown pictorially. Soundings included. Prime meridians: Paris and Ferro. Possibly printed in Paris. Decorative cartouche includes two women representing astronomy and navigation hold a globe, compass and paper, and telescope. Also includes windheads, royal coat of arms of France, and palm trees.
