Historical notes:
According to the imprint, this map is the work of Giovanni Vavassore. It could have been prepared as early as 1522, based on Bernard Sylvanus' world map printed in his 1511 edition of Ptolemy in Venice. Shirley proposes that a date of ca. 1540 is more probable for this map. Only four or five copies of this map are known.
