Historical notes:
'Terra de lavoratore" refers to João Fernandes who was named "el lavrador" and who was a Portuguese explorer who may have made western discoveries. The term "stretto pte del mondo novo" refers to the strait separating North and South America. The island "Brasil" was a fictitious island from Irish legend. Asmaide island is also found on other maps such as Waldeemüller's 1513 map. Sonetti's book of islands was the first to describe islands, but his islands were all maps of islands in the Greek archipelago. Bordone's book expanded the subject matter by attempting to chart the islands of the entire world.
