Plan of Portobello, in present-day Panama, identifying naval vessels and their positions during Vernon's attack. "P. Durell delin. November 1739" above bottom neat line. "W.H. Toms Sculpt 1740" in lower right corner above bottom neat line. Below dedication is certification by James Rentone that this is accurately copied from the original and only plan brought to England by Rentone. In the lowest compartment, beneath "A scale of two English miles" are 27 references, lettered A-P, to identified places or incidents in the action (one of them alluding to Rentone).

Part of the War of the Austrian Succession, sometimes known as the War of Jenkins' Ear, this battle resulted in Admiral Edward Vernon becoming a popular hero in England and English North American colonies.
