Historical notes:
This map was produced to build support for the War of Jenkins' Ear, a conflict between Britain and Spain lasting from 1739 to 1741 or 1742 when it became part of the War of the Austrian Succession. By the provisions of the 1729 Treaty of Seville, Britain had agreed not to trade with Spanish colonies, and the Spanish were permitted to board British vessels to verify their compliance. During one such boarding, the captain Robert Jenkins claimed that the Spanish had cut off his ear. Approximately 3,300 Virginians and Georgians fought with the British forces sent to the Caribbean, making this war the first foreign war fought by American colonists. The English suffered shocking losses, and no appreciable territorial gains or losses were accrued.
