Historical notes:
Jean Ribault led an to Charlesford in present-day South Carolina in 1562. After the Protestant Ribault sought refuge in England following the Edict of Nantes, his second in command René de Laudonnière led a second expedition to Fort Caroline in present-day Jacksonville, Florida, in 1564. A third expedition led by Ribault resulted in the death of Ribault and many of his men at the hands of the Spanish. Domingue de Gourgues led an expedition in 1567 to avenge Ribault's death.
