Historical notes:
This "modern" map was first added to the 1513 edition of Reisch's Margarita philosphica. The northern and southern portions of the New World are joined together, with the words, "Zoana Mela" (the meaning of which is unclear, but is possibly a corruption of Juana insula [or the name Columbus gave to Cuba]) on the northern portion. See Stelio Cro for a hypothesis as to why Cuba is labeled "Zoanna Mela."
