Map of the Guianas, showing the route of Charles Leigh. Includes the northern coast of South America from present-day Venezuela to the mouth of the Amazon River, as well as some Caribbean islands. Cartographic elements include degrees of latitude and longitude, scales, compass rose, some topographical details, the location of Lake Parime and other lakes. Decorative cartouche includes a scene of men landing on shore from a ship and burying a coffin. Native Americans in the background gather maize and other foods to give to the English.

In 1604, Captain Charles Leigh made the first unsuccessful English attempt at settlement on the Oyapock (Wiapoco) River, in present-day Guyana. It failed when he and others did not find the gold allegedly discovered by Walter Raleigh and died of illness.This image follows the special title page for Zee-togt van Kapiteyn Charles Leig, gedaan na Gujana ... , Leiden, 1706.This collection of voyages consists of 127 parts, each having a special title page, separate pagination, and register. The voyages covering the period from 1246 to 1696 are arranged chronologically.
