Historical notes:
This early map, one of the few to show Hispaniola under Spanish rule, shows Tortuga Island enlarged with decorative details. Tortuga was both too small and too logistically important to have a settled history. Skirmishing by the French, Spanish, English, and Dutch, left it open to lawlessness, and eventually pirates established a foothold on the island until laws in 1680 abolished piracy and forbade sailing under a foreign flag.
