First discovered by the Spanish in 1547, Potosí was illustrated in Pedro de Cieza de León, Parte primera de la chronica del Peru, Seville, 1553. Arnoldus Montanus took that image and modified it in his De nieuwe en onbekende Weereld, Amsterdam, 1671, adding palm trees and windmills. The image shown here derives from Montanus's view.
