Historical notes: 
Wafer joined Bartholomew Sharp and William Dampier on an expedition aimed at raiding Spanish settlements in Central and South America from 1679 to 1681. After a near fatal accident on the isthmus of Panama, he was nursed back to health by the Cuna Indians of the region. He was engaged by the Darien Company in 1698 as a consultant.
