Historical notes:
Dobbs, an advocate for North Pacific exploration, influential member of the Irish House of Commons, and later colonial governor of North Carolina, was interested in proving that a Northwest Passage existed. He also wished to abolish the monopoly held by the Hudson's Bay Company, a monopoly he saw as a deterrent in the exploration and exploitation of the area.
