Cartobibliographic notes:
Intended to promote William Penn's colonization effort, this map is the first separate map of Pennsylvania to be issued. Much of the delineation of the map is based upon the Augustine Herrman map, Virginia and Maryland. The eastern shore of Delaware Bay and Delaware River are derived from the John Thornton and Robert Green map, A Mapp of Virginia, Mary-Land, [etc.]. This map was also used by Penn to put forward his claim for land also claimed by the Maryland proprietor. Both proprietors were granted lands divided by the fortieth degree of latitude. The problem over where that latitude lay and the boundary between the two colonies was not finally agreed upon until 1767 when Mason and Dixon ran their Line west from the Delaware border. This map contends that the dividing line between the two proprietorships was a good deal more to the south than was the case. The Blathwayt Atlas is a collection of 48 maps assembled between 1680 and 1685 as a reference atlas for the Office of Trade and Plantations, compiled by William Blathwayt, Secretary to the Lords of Trade and Plantations.
