Cartobibliographic notes:
Thomas Clarke, whose name has not been found on any other map, is included in the Thames school of map makers. Bermuda was one of the proprietary colonies under the control of the Somers Islands Company, and the Lords of Trade and Plantations had very little to do with it until 1679, when colonists began to express their grievances against the company. The charter of the Somers Islands Company was revoked in 1684 when the island came under the direct jurisdiction of England. Richard Norwood surveyed the island first in 1617 and again in 1663 to 1665.The Blathwayt Atlas is a collection of 48 maps assembled between 1680 and 1685 as a reference atlas for the Office of Trade and Plantations, compiled by William Blathwayt, Secretary to the Lords of Trade and Plantations.
