Cartobibliographic notes:
|
Ortelius was the creator of the first true atlas (defined as a collection of uniform map sheets and sustaining text bound to form a book for which copper printing plates were specifically engraved). Frequently revised, this atlas was the last one to be printed during Ortelius's lifetime. Ortelius drew the map of Hispaniola himself based on Gerard Mercator's 1569 world map, Diego Guttierez's 1562 America map and Alonso de Santa Cruz' 1560 Isolario. This map is the first detailed map of the Caribbean and one of the first to detail western Mexico.
