Map of Virginia and Maryland, including parts of New Jersey, Delaware, and North Carolina. North orientated to right. Cartographic elements include locations of rivers, marshes, and settlements, degrees of latitude, scale, soundings, sea banks, and compass rose. Decorative elements include portrait of Augustine Herrman, British royal coat of arms, coat of arms of Maryland, dwellings, ships, and canoe or boat. Decorative cartouche includes a Native American man and woman with bow and arrow.
Cartobibliographic notes:
Herrman's map is considered the first adequate map of Maryland and was the prototype of published maps of the Chesapeake Bay region, used extensively in the running of the Mason and Dixon line between Maryland and Pennsylvania. Herrman, a surveyor and draughtsman by profession, completed the map in about ten years and was rewarded with an immense tract of many thousands of acres principally in Cecil County, Maryland. A copy of a version of this map was made in manuscript and was included in the Blathwayt atlas. See 8189-16 and 8189-17.
