notes:
The Dutch attempt to make Tobago a Dutch colony ended in 1677. The Dutch had landed in Tobago in 1624, but a series of European claimants, including the dukedom of Courland (in present-day Latvia), tried unsuccessfully to possess the island. In February and March 1677, the Dutch under the command of Jacob Binckes, a Dutch privateer, with only 700 soldiers and 15 ships, had repelled the French attack under the command of Admiral d'Estrée who had 24 ships and over 4,000 men. D'Estrée, however, returned in December 1677 and captured the weakened Dutch fort. Binckes had Fort Sterreschans, a star-shaped fort, built on Klip Bay when he arrived to claim the island for the Dutch in 1676.
