notes:
Text describes Domingo Fernandez, a black man from the Congo, with a sarcocele, a spherical hernia of the testicles or elephantiasis (disease caused by parasitic worms that is characterized by the thickening of the skin and underlying tissues, especially in the legs and genitals). The plates in this book represent almost half of the production of published Cuban images for the eighteenth century. It is the first Cuban book illustrated by a Cuban. The plates were etched by Manuel Antonio Parra, the author's son. Other copies of the book have hand-colored plates.Image title from chapter title.
