notes:
Appointed "visitador general" of Mexico in 1639, Palafox y Mendoza served as the bishop of Puebla of Los Angeles until 1649. His appointment to the uncelebrated bishopric of Osma in Spain in 1655 was the equivalent of enforced retirement and public humiliation. The process of his canonization was begun in 1726, but a final decision was suspended in 1777.
