notes:
Text describes the account of Sir Richard Whitbourne in Newfoundland when he saw a strange creature swimming in the harbor of Saint John. It came up to the ship and tried to get in but the men on the boat struck it until it fell back into the water. Having blue streaks resembling hair and a tail, Whitbourne acknowledges that it might have been a mermaid but he was not sure. This image is derived from Theodor de Bry, America, part 13, p. 4, and follows the special title page for Twee scheeps-togten van Kapiteyn Johan Smith beyde gedaan na Nieuw-Engeland ..., Leiden, 1707. This collection of voyages consists of 127 parts, each having a special title page, separate pagination, and register. The voyages covering the period from 1246 to 1696 are arranged chronologically.
