Description:
Map of the Guianas, including Caribbean islands such as Hispaniola, the lower Antilles, and present-day Venezuela to the mouth of the Amazon River. Cartographic elements include degrees of latitude and longitude, scales, compass rose, location of rivers and lakes, including the fictitious Lake Parime and site of the fictitious Manoa, and some topographical details. Decorative cartouche includes scene of European conversing with a native American king or ruler. Includes bales or chest, ships, coconut palm trees, rolls of tobacco, feathered headdresses and garment.

Harcourt, following on Sir Walter Raleigh's initiative, traveled to Guiana in 1608 to discover the fabled city of Manoa or El Dorado. He also was intent on founding English settlements in Guiana. This image follows the special title page for Scheeps-togt van Robert Harcourt, na Gujana ..., Leiden, 1707. This collection of voyages consists of 127 parts, each having a special title page, separate pagination, and register. The voyages covering the period from 1246 to 1696 are arranged chronologically.
