notes:
The Jewish Savannah, the first permanent Jewish settlement in the New World, was settled first by Portuguese Jews between 1635 and 1639. During the first half of the eighteenth century, the 2,000 inhabitants of the Jewish Savannah constituted half of Suriname's white population. The tent-boat is described in the text as being used by rich people to travel from one plantation to another or to town. Image title taken from List of Illustrations preceding plates.
