notes:
There are no existing portraits of Toussaint Louverture drawn from the life. This is the first known representation of him and was based on an oral description. Toussaint Louverture, originally named François Dominique Toussaint (ca. 1743-1803), led the rebellion of slaves against the Spanish and French rulers of the island of Hispaniola (present-day Haiti and Santo Domingo), successfully fought for the abolition of slavery, and briefly established a black-governed French protectorate.
