notes:
Properly speaking, buccaneers were originally natives of the Caribbean, but the term came to refer to any pirates who attacked shipping in the Caribbean. The word comes from the Tupi "buccan" for the wooden frame on which the meat was placed and then the French "boucanier," to smoke meat. Attributed to Jean-François André, de Ligneville (Vosges) by Bibliotheque Nationale catalog. Date of publication from BN catalog.
