Zappa, an Italian and Jesuit missionary in Mexico, brought a statue of Our Lady of Loreto, as well as precise measurements of the house at Loreto said to be the house in which the Virgin Mary received the angel Gabriel, from Italy in 1675. He supervised the construction of the Loreto chapel at Tepotzotlán which began in 1678.
