notes:
Daniel Defoe's story of Robinson Crusoe was based on the story of Alexander Selkirk who went to sea in 1704 with William Dampier and was put ashore on Juan Fernandez Island off of the coast of Chile where he survived until he was rescued in 1709 by Woodes Rogers. This image illustrates Captain Edward Cooke's account of the ship that rescued Selkirk. Volumes 1 and 2 (and perhaps vols. 3 and 4) of this series were edited by David Henry.
