Gist, an American frontiersman, was commissioned by the Ohio Company to survey its territory from 1750 to 1752, exploring Kentucky well before the more famous Daniel Boone. He served as guide on General Edward Braddock's unsuccessful campaign against Fort Duquesne in 1755.
