General John Burgoyne, leading a force of some some 9,000 men, including about 4,200 British regulars, 4,000 German troops, and several hundred Canadians and native Americans embarked from Canada, on June 17, 1777. In July 1777, this mill and blockhouse used as a temporary headquarters for the American forces under General Philip Schuyler were burned to keep them out of the hands of the British.
