Historical notes:
Formaleoni claimed that the Venetians discovered the West Indies prior to Columbus and offers as proof maps with the island of Antillia (or Antilia) on them. Antilia was a legendary island always shown with a distinctive rectangular shape notched with several bays. It was reputed during the age of exploration to lie in the Atlantic Ocean far to the west of Portugal and Spain. The island joined other fictional islands such as Isle of Seven Cities, Ilha das Sete Cidades (Portuguese), Septe Cidades, Sanbrandan (or Saint Brendan). This map was engraved from Andrea Bianco's 1436 manuscript map in the Library of San Marco. Bianco had also collaborated with Fra Mauro on the Fra Mauro world map of 1459.
