Historical notes:
Hennepin claimed to be the first European to descend the Mississippi River, although scholars have refuted that claim. After Hennepin, a Recollet priest, who traveled to the Illinois River territory, switched loyalty from France to William III and England, he included a map in his books which showed the entire length of the Mississippi River. His previous publication provided a dotted line which hypothesized the course of the river. The Mississippi (here named the River Meschasipi) is shown far west of its actual location.
