This manuscript map is in the style of the Thames school, although the particular cartographer who made it is not known. The scale on the eastern coast of Terra Nova is enlarged from the other sides (possibly because it was the chief area of the English fishing interest). The source of the place name "Cambalu" has not been satisfactorily identified. It has been conjectured to have come from Marco Polo's use of the name for Bejing. The problem of the Newfoundland fisheries and the disputes arising from the conflicting interests of landowners and seasonal fishing fleets was of special concern to the Office of Trade and Plantations and, although not particularly accurate, this map would have provided useful information. The Blathwayt Atlas is a collection of 48 maps assembled between 1680 and 1685 as a reference atlas for the Office of Trade and Plantations, compiled by William Blathwayt, Secretary to the Lords of Trade and Plantations.
