Cartobibliographic notes:
This version of Thornton's map of the world is in a proof state. It lacks the name of the engraver, James Clark, and several decorative features which would have been on the finished map. The publisher used one or more contemporary Dutch world maps to compile this map. In addition, he incorporated much material from English maps, many of which he had published. The southern part of South America, the depiction of Hudson Bay, and the inclusion of the names and relatively correct locations of English colonies in North America are taken from English maps. Sir James Hayes is best known for his connection with the Hudson's Bay Company. He was secretary to Prince Rupert, its first governor, and was one of the original investors and deputy governor of the company. The Blathwayt Atlas is a collection of 48 maps assembled between 1680 and 1685 as a reference atlas for the Office of Trade and Plantations, compiled by William Blathwayt, Secretary to the Lords of Trade and Plantations.
