Robert Thorne, a merchant resident in Seville, probably copied a world map from Gregor Reisch's map of 1513, and enriched that outline with his own knowledge to reflect (perhaps illicitly known) Spanish manuscript sources. His advice to the English to explore a northwest or northeast passage (avoiding the Spanish and Portuguese dominance around the southern routes), may have led to Willoughby and Chancellor's voyage to Novaya Zemlya in 1553 and Frobisher's voyage of 1576 to 1578 to discover a northern route to the east and its lucrative trade.
