Historical notes:
Commonly called the "Ramusio map," this large and important early woodcut map was derived from two Spanish manuscript charts. It helped publicize the latest information about the newly discovered continents. This map included the Pacific Ocean, here called the Mare del Sur, and the Strait of Magellan, for the first time in print. It also showed the Caribbean islands as a recognizable chain of islands for the first time, it showed the shape of South America and the continuous coast of North America for the first time. The map is mentioned in a description of two maps intended to be found in volume two of Giovanni Baptista Ramusio's Historia de l'Indie Occidentali, Venice, 1534, but has only been found in three known examples."M.D. xxxiiii. Del mese di Dicembre." precedes the title.
